Methadone- a Lifeline for Drug Addicts

Giving up narcotic drug and heroin usage can produce in the addicts many withdrawal symptoms. This drug does not cause the high feelings associated with drugs. Most drug addiction and detox programs have this medicine on their agenda. Being a narcotic palliative Methadone also finds use as a pain reliever.

It is not prescribed for people suffering from asthma, paralytic ileus- a bowel impediment, those who are allergic to narcotics and for pregnant women.

Methodone doses may be administered through tablets, liquid solution, dispersible pills and injections. The injections are never given with the use of the pill or liquid form. Dispersible tablets won’t dissolve completely in the juice or water; they have to be ingested in the mixture form itself.

Alcohol and Methadone should not be consumed simultaneously as it can produce grave side effects or can be fatal. Overdose of Methadone can cause death hence proper regulation of dosage and doctor supervision is needed while consuming this drug. Don’t take additional quantum of the medicine if you miss doses.

If you miss doses for longer than three days you may have to resume consumption of the drug at a smaller dose and the doctor’s advice is required. Stoppage of its consumption abruptly can produce painful withdrawal symptoms and is hence not advocated.
