However this drug is prescribed for relieving post surgery pain only if the patient was taking it prior to surgery and his or her body is tolerant of it.

This prescription medicine should be taken under doctor supervision. This is because overdose can have detrimental effects. While consuming this medicine alcohol or other sedatives and tranquilizers must be avoided to prevent harmful effects. The usual side effects of this drug include confused thinking, poor reactive ability and constipation.

The dosage must be taken by swallowing the pill with water. Breaking the tablet or chewing the contents can cause too much of the drug to be assimilated by the body at a time which can be harmful in case of extended release pills meant for slow action. Sudden stoppage of medicine intake will invite withdrawal symptoms and is hence not advisable.

This drug is never prescribed for those who are allergenic to narcotics or narcotic cough drugs, those suffering from asthma, paralytic ileus and pregnant women.
